Passion is overrated. What You Really Need Is Discipline

In our everyday life from college to any other professional environment it is forced to believe that one must follow their passion or passion is something that is the only fuel for the success.

This is still true for many of us in this world where passion is seen as the only fantasy. Passion alone cannot get you to the lasting success it is rather a term over used and over sold by modern gurus whose audience would rather hear something nice than to face difficult truths for succeeding in life.

“Talent without discipline is like an octopus on roller skates. There’s plenty of movement, but you never know if it’s going to be forward, backwards, or sideways.”

— H. Jackson Brown, Jr

Passion is something overrated because it can suddenly motivate any individual, but it is also proven as unstable and temporary state for many of us. The actual relation of success and passion is: passion motivates and motivation causes actions which generate results.

The main problem with passion, it is as other emotional states, melts and wanes. Sometimes we are motivated and sometimes we are not.  So passion has ups and down in itself. This clearly means if your actions are affected with passion level, then your results will depend on your emotions. When we feel passionate it will generate actions and results, and when we are not passionate then it will disappoint us and it will result in mediocre results or even no result at all.

Using passion as your only arm in your hand will not assure you the long lasting success because success is an ongoing struggle with some discipline.

Passions produce results based on emotions but self-discipline assures steady moves and stability. This doesn’t mean that it is a disease but it does really need backup from discipline.

Discipline is a quality that is quieter and passion has noise that is why it is getting more attention.

“It is not enough to have great qualities; We should also have the management of them.”

— La Rochefoucauld

Life is pathway where there we have to set some goals and run after them. If we have only one goal to achieve then we can go hard at it and passionate attack to this may give us the result. But when life is an ongoing struggle where have to set goals for a certain period then after achieving them we have to set more milestones to go after. Thus the passion cannot stand with us for a steady race, here all we need a consistent approach towards set goals and discipline is the right art for all this.

Self-discipline means self-control, producing some inner strength and control of yourself, your actions. Self-discipline gives you the power to stick to your decisions and follow them through, without changing your mind, and is therefore, one of the important requirements for achieving goals.
